23rd Pauri of Japji: dispels darkness and elevates the self.

Merging with the great ocean.

Today I have been meditating on where are the boundaries of who we are?
What distinguishes us from our environment?
At what point do we say this is me and that is you?
Is our boundary at the surface of our skin,
or is it at the level of our aura?
or is it at the level of our subtle body?

The simple breath without which we can’t live comes in and out of us. Therefore the external air is part of us and with every exhale we leave part of us in the air. Science tells us when we exhale we expel carbon that was part of our body previously

We also get affected by the food we eat, by the people we meet, by the actions we perform, and so on.

The food we eat, can literary alter our DNA, the air we breathe influences our brain activity. Who we think we are is directly related to our environment.

Where is the boundary between me and the other?

Guru Nanak in the 23rd pauri speaks of the rivers that merge into the ocean. He speaks of how everything belongs to the magnificent vastness of creation.
He ends the pauri with the beautiful sentiment that not even an ant is forgotten provided he/she remembers the Creator.

You are not separate, you belong.
Never forget it.
